Neon brights have jumped from the runway into hair on the street, thanks to celebrities including Scarlett Johansson (cherry red), Katy Perry (fuchsia), Rihanna and Dianna Agron from “Glee,” who just went hot pink. But for those of us who aren’t attention-starved peacocks or rock stars, there is a more subtle option: a splash of color that suggests “look at me again,” according to the New York-based hair stylist Ric Pipino.
The D.J. Chelsea Leyland has vibrant purple on all of her ends, and Kate Bosworth recently dyed her tips turquoise, but some of Pipino’s other clients are sneaking in fun color on the sly — a whole layer of brightly hued locks underneath that is revealed when hair is pulled into a pony or french braid, or when it swings in the breeze (we wish). He has called the less-is-more process “Dunk It.”
“It’s as much for kids as it is for women looking to have a fun change, without it being permanent, and without it being damaging,” says Pipino, who has been collaborating with the London colorists Bleach London at his recently opened Upper East Side salon Pipino 57.
It’s not just for style mongers. Pipino says that’s because the color is more controlled and many professionals are having it done. He thinks the trend will live well past summer and we’ll see color popping underneath in the fall, but it will be richer and darker. Dunk It costs $100 to $150.
The colorist and salon owner Rita Hazan can take credit for Katy Perry’s recent hair transformation — from raven to black, to red, blond and Perry’s latest choice of color, pink.
