Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “More Than You Can Feel” by Vandervelde from his 2011 single on Secretly Canadian.
Now going by just his surname, David Vandervelde got his start at 14 playing in a hardcore band, and in 2003 started producing and recording from his Holland, Michigan, basement for friends and local bands. Since that start, he began collaborating with Jay Bennett (R.I.P.) and worked to produce his own solo record in Chicago. Secretly Canadian picked him up and produced his very first solo album in 2007 in which he covers it all: guitar, vocals, drums, piano, bass, and various synthesizers throughout. Drawing closer to roots than ever, Vandervelde has since moved to Nashville to set up there indefinitely.
Today’s featured song, “More Than You Can Feel,” an early, bluesy, single from an album he’s still working on, opens up with yearning vocals and intricate instrumentation. Vandervelde’s resonant vocals channel a grassroots feel both present and past. With an untraditional structure, the bulk of the song builds a suspense with the first lines and chorus, focusing on instrumentation and simple lyrics. There is a shift in the last third of the song, a little more expository, folksy, and explanatory. The final message is to listen to it again and again because it leaves you lingering and teasing, like a single should.
Currently, there are no upcoming shows to report, as apparently he’s still hard at work on the forthcoming album, but you should keep checking in with his MySpace and Facebook pages for updates. Recently, though, Vandervelde performed on Music City Roots, a weekly live musical variety show broadcast from Nashville. Fast forward to the 1:11:00 mark to catch his performance:
